When I published the Club’s track and field records earlier this year, I recognised that it would take some special performances to break some of the older Club records. These were set when many Club members competed in track and field competitions. Well I witnessed a special performance last night, when Ian Barrett ran not just a fast 1500m but had proceeded that with a quick 600m about a couple of hours before.
It takes a special athlete to run two such fast times in one evening and Ian is certainly that. Admitting that he hadn’t run on the track since his “Uni days”, his sub-2 minutes 600m would be newsworthy in its own right, especially so soon after his Great Welsh Marathon run (read about here). But Ian’s 5m 20s 1500m took 18s off Club stalwart, Tony Curry’s record set in 1992!
What did Ian think about his performance? Well, he was disappointed that he wasn’t closer to 5 minutes and that his legs just wouldn’t go round fast enough. Perhaps, don’t do two races in an evening next time, Ian!
There’s still quite a few records from the 1990s to have a go at, especially for our younger Master athletes, including quite a few held by Tony Curry and Brian Wither. So the gauntlet is there for other Club members to pick up.
It was quite an evening of athletics for the Club. It’s probably nearly 30 years since we had so many Club vests at a track meeting. We hope to repeat this soon, so if you fancy having a go and running faster than you have on the roads, why not? I will be posting about our next such “outing” and you too can have a go at setting a PB or even breaking a Club track and field record, or just having fun.
Ian’s performances:
600m 1:54.99 (inaugural MV50 record)
1500m 5:20.07 (new Club record)
