{If I’ve missed anyone’s achievements, and they’re not overly shy, please let me know for inclusion in future reports. Also any constructive comments welcome, including on layout/tech etc. I'm still working on placing/sizing of photos.... }

PARKRUN

The weekend kicked off as usual with Parkruns. In muddy, wet and soggy conditions Kate Jacobs was first lady home at Cirencester in 20.23, whilst in Tetbury Rachel Macadam was tail-walker, after a calf strain sustained on holiday (get fit soon Rachel!). Ciren also saw the first run as a new club member for Ben Hilditch, just 5s ahead of his sister and recent member Angela. [ Ed. A (belated) welcome to both of you – you’ve already lowered the average age of our active seniors by a few years ;-)]

CROSS COUNTRY

Later on Saturday, the first of four meetings in the Glos Cross Country League took place, with a series of races for under 11’s to over 65’s across differing distances. Thirteen juniors comfortably outnumbered our 6 seniors, one of whom was new member Andy Duff in his first outing for the club. Andy, a keen cyclist, was running his first XC in 30 years – hopefully not his last – plenty of recovery time before the next one!

Dorian Matts has kindly supplied the follow account (full results at the end) :-

Well, it was earlier than usual, but still a month after the Nationals, the first Gloucestershire Cross Country league race was held at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre. I don’t know if was the earlier timing, or the fact it was quite a way from Cirencester but numbers were down on previous years. However, we did manage to get girls’ and boys’ teams in the Under 11s and Under 13s but above that we didn’t have any teams, but a few individuals running in the age group races through to the last race of the day, the men’s.

The weather was sunny, but too hot, the course flat, mainly around rugby pitches, but squelchy in places. There was a very steep 5 steps hill near the end of the lap.

The first race of the day, the combined Under 13s boys and girls, saw good performances from all our runners, especially considering some are better over shorter distances on the track. Toby was our first boy home in 12th.  In the Under 11s we had two top 10 finishes, from new member Ed Knight who came 10th in his race and Annabel Campbell who also came 10th for the Club. Ed said he found it tiring, slippery in places and had hurt his ankle, probably going up a short but very steep slope, near the end of the race. There were other good performances, including Alex Willis’ first XC race, having to wait an extra year due to the change in the minimum age last year. However, most of the children enjoyed the first race of the season.

In the senior races, Aaron led the way in the men’s race, not for the first time, finishing just outside the podium places for his age group.

Eleanor Fraser, Yate XC

In the ladies race, our only competitor was Corinne Clark, getting back into her running and finishing very well in 3rd in her age category. The other Club runner in the “ladies race” was the author (Dorian), who having now joined the MV65 men [Ed. this definitely counts as old] can race over the shorter race. He found it more interesting than the men’s race as he wasn’t running on his own for most of the way with other runners far off in the distance. He was pleased to use his sprinting speed to overtake three ladies (well, he’s no gentleman!) in the last 100m.”

 ROAD RACING

Sunday saw several club members in action, this time on the roads.

Dave Bell, Lightning Bolt 10k, 13.10.24

In lovely cool conditions and very little wind, Dave Bell’s ran his best time in over 3 years of 33:42, finishing 7th in the Lightning Bolt 10k in Chippenham (a fairly small race of c.300). Unsurprisingly he was very pleased with that, hitting his goal pace of 5:25 pace spot on, and managing to keep it controlled and consistent throughout the race too.

Two of our ladies ran in the Oxford half marathon, a bigger event with almost 10,000 runners.  Joyce Matthews, dropping down from her usual marathon distance, finished in 1.41.19, whilst Jos Randall was (and looks) “seriously chuffed” with her time of 2.10.02 (although her Strava was showing sub 2.10?). Well done both.
