TRIBUTE TO TONY

Some of you may have seen the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard last week with a front page tribute to Tony. Club President David Edelsten has very kindly written the following to capture Tony's athletic achievements which will hopefully be included in tomorrow's edition.

Dear editor

In addition to the many tributes to Tony Curry and your leading article in this week's Standard I would like to highlight some of his athletic achievements.

Tony joined Cirencester Athletics Club in 1989 and soon became a linchpin of the club. Apart from his own athletic achievements, including representing UK in triathlon, he served in many committee roles over a 30 year period and was a key player in the organisation of the club's events despite his long battle with cancer and diabetes. He would always make himself available to help the club's growth and successes in any way he could. His expertise and enthusiasm spread much wider than the club though as he became a well known figure in the organisation of many major UK triathlons. He was also involved with the London Marathon for many years, marshalling on the finish line to congratulate and support the many thousands of participants, even after his own health began to deteriorate. His enthusiasm and encouragement will be greatly missed throughout the world of athletics.

Tony resigned from the club committee in December 2019. In appreciation of his hard work and dedication over so many years a silver salver inscribed with our gratitude and thanks as well as the book written by Chris O'Carroll, Ultra Distance Running World Record Breakers were purchased with a view to making a formal presentation at the Annual Awards celebration in 2020. Unfortunately of course this did not take place which was disappointing as Tony would have, in his words, "liked to have had a good laugh", so the gifts were delivered to Tony in a Covid-19 secure manner last August.

Tony e-mailed his thanks for the fantastic gifts. Chris O'Carroll had included a card in the signed copy of the book which Tony said brought back so may great memories of running in the 1980's. A sympathy card and a copy of the tributes from members posted on the CAC WhatsApp group were delivered to Tony's family yesterday.
