Juniors and Teens compete across weekend

Emily Averies on her bike!

The weekend of 6th & 7th June was a busy weekend for our junior members competing, whether on foot, or jumping or even cycling.

There was :

  • the second Low Key Open where seven of our Junior and Teens members took part in a range of track and field events on Sunday 7th.

  • Fairford Fun Run (3km) complete with obstacles, where a few of our younger members ran. also on Sunday7th !

  • British Schools Cycling Association National Hill Climb Championships, in Ditcham, Petersfield, on Saturday 6th, where new member, Emily Averies, (Alice's older sister) came third overall.

I don't usually post about non athletics / running events (as I'm not really competent to comment) but as Emily joined the Club to improve her running so she could do duathlons, if not triathlons, I thought it was worth reporting. We don't run triathlon training sessions for the junior section, but we do have a swim session on a Sunday evening (18:30) at the Leisure Centre, so any younger members who fancy giving triathlon a go, should contact me, if they're not already a member of the Cirencester Swimming Club, and I know several are.

Low Key Open 2

At the LKO we had four Juniors and three Teens:

Juniors

Recent members Alfie Grayburn (10) and Alice Parry (8), plus Evelyn Mawby (8) and Henry Thomas (11)

Alfie tried out 100m sprint and long jump.

As it was Alice's first competition she tried a range of events: 600m (a QuadsKids event), 60m sprint (we now have PB Awards standards for U10s for that), and long jump.

Evelyn just did the 60m sprint.

Henry, following his prowess over the indoor hurdles at Sportshall last winter, did hurdles and his favourite event long jump.

Alfie found the LKO a great introduction to track and field, mum saying "Alfie had a fantastic time yesterday at the event in Cheltenham. He did brilliantly and was great for him to see what a competition looked and felt like. He’s desperate to do more." Thankfully, there's another one coming soon. on 28th June.

Both girls did the 60m sprints, albeit in different heats and got exactly the same time! The time is very good for the distance but we don't recognise it officially as the event is not EA registered, so does not have suitably trained officials. But there are plenty of open events that do for the girls to "post" Club age group records.

The key aspect of the LKOs is to get youngsters used the protocols and processes of track and field competitions so they are no intimidated when going to an actual registered meeting.

Teens

Holly Ralling (12), Luca Sage (12), Oliver Grant (13), which was the first time for them.

Holly at her coach's suggestion did "power events" : long jump and shot. Luca did 1500m and Luca tried 1500m nd the shot put too; Oliver just doing the former. Mind you, after a 1500m i don't think i would want to do anything else either!

Fairford Fun Run

This annual 3k event run on the same day as the 10k (see report here for results) is run by volunteers and the results are not available yet. I will update this report when they are.

Winner, Toby Conway, showing real effort to win. He had to climb over a gate as well!

LKO RESULTS

in order of event schedule, (with standard achieved)

U10 600m

Alice Parry 2:48.8 (Stage 4 ESAA)

U12 75m Hurdles

Henry Thomas 13.1

(NB there isn't a boys U12 or U14 PB award level for this distance but the girls equivalent makes this about a Level 4 PB award, so we need to get Henry over the hurdles again in a proper T&F hurdles event)

U14 1500m

Luca Sage 5:56.3 (Stage 2 ESAA)

Oliver Grant 6:29.6 (not yet reaching the standards but a big improvement in his speed)

U10 60m

Alice Parry 9.7

Evelyn Mawby 9.7

This time is a PB level 9 award, which is very high - we'll have to see if they can repeat this at a proper meeting, before we open the champagne!

U12 100m

Alfie Grayburn 15.5 (this is a Level 2 PB Award for the U13s, so well done.)

U14 Long Jump

Holly Ralling 3.90 (Level 5 PB Award, so really well done)

U10 Long Jump

Alice Parry 2.03 (Level 6 PB award, so really well done)

U12 Long Jump

Henry Thomas 3.78 (level 8 PB award, so really well done)

Alfie Grayburn 2.82 (level 4 PB award, so really well done)

U14 Shot Put

Holly Ralling 9.33m (level 7 PB award, so really well done)

Luca Sage 5.62m (Stage 4 ESAA)
