Chasing hills and prizes....lots of CAC success this week!

8 September 2024, Great North Run,  Newcastle to South Shields, 13.1 miles road Joyce Matthews (Cirencester AC) 1.43.00

8 September 2024, Upcote Farm Trail, Withington, nr Cheltenham, 5 miles trail1 Rob Forbes (Cirencester AC) 32.01 – 1st V40, Barbara Thomas 1.05.04

7 September 2024, Cranham Boundary Chase, 5.6 miles road Kate Jacobs (Cirencester AC) 37.22 – 2nd lady / 1st FV45, Corinne Clark 42.44 – 5th lady, Brian Harris 42.58, Charlotte Wilton 44.32, James Widdowson 46.23, Rachel Ranger 48.14, Ruth Fulford 1.05.19 – 1st FV75

This race was a further road race in both the county and club series, over a non-standard 5.6 miles course of ups and downs along country lanes around the picturesque village of Cranham. The hill just before the finish in the Cricket Club must be one of the steepest on the local circuit, and reportedly forced plenty to walk!

Our ladies did us proud again, with a good haul or prizes (chocolate or alcohol being a tough choice) - Kate Jacobs finished 2nd lady, there were age group prizes for Corrine Clark, Charlotte Wilton (despite a severe bout of covid earlier in the week) and Ruth Fulford, with Rachel Ranger doing well just to get round nursing a sore rib.

{As we go to print} we are awaiting the official county team rankings, but having won the team event at Cranham, Stroud ladies look like the main threat. Well done to the CAC ladies another cracking performance!

Brian Harris was first man home for the club, in his first race after more than 3 weeks off recovering from dipping his toe into the murky world of ultra running. He was relieved to be back on the road, apart from the last hill where he had no hesitation in walking.

Next in were triathlon specialist Ian Moore (having already both swum and cycled earlier in the day!) and almost-local James Widdowson, enjoying the views if not all the hills.

James reports.....Saturday saw me up at Cranham for the Boundary Chase, part of the very family-friendly Cranham Feast! It was one of the largest club turnouts since Fairford I would say. The course is stunningly beautiful and contains hills to test your mettle, anyone keen on fell racing would feel right at home! I’d really encourage others to give this event a go in years to come.
