Bugatti results and latest county/club road champs standings

Firstly, Andy Hindson sent in this report from 3rd August (last weekend).

“The Standish Woodland Chase is a great low-key event which I've run 3 times out the last 4 years with just 92 entrants on Sunday. This year it was particularly humid, making it hard work to climb up Horsemarling Lane to do the first of 2 loops taking in the Cotswold Way to Haresfield Beacon. There's a great downhill from Haresfield Beacon for a 2km enabling to me to get a sub 5 min kilometre!

My times have been pretty consistent over the years: 1h 26m this year, 1h 24m in 2023 and 1h 23m in 2022.”

Wednesday 6th August -Bugatti 10k

This was both a club and county championship road race.  Organised by Almost Athletes, it gets its name from the HQ location at the Bugatti Owners club outside Cheltenham. A bit like the Blaisdon course, there are (different) hills down at the start and unfortunately up at the end, with some undulating between.  It was good to see the club posting team scores for both men and ladies (minimum 3 in a team).

Club captain Kate Jacobs secured 3rd lady and 1st LV45, with recently joined Storm Trow finishing in 6th. One of the most experienced runners in the field, Ruth Fulford completed the ladies team.

Men’s captain Aaron Willis was also in action, finishing just 6 seconds behind Rich Allen who just dipped under 37 minutes chip time.

Andy Duff took a break from his York marathon training plan and improved on his recent Blaisdon time.

James Widdowson was several minutes slower than his strong showing at Blaisdon, and offered this report :-

“Km 1-5: downhill, fast, warm.   Km 6-8: struggling, chiding myself for 🍻 choices at weekend, so unprofessional!!   4 days insufficient to recover.  Km 9-10: uphill, noticed not really dropping any places, then overtook 5 in last 500m 💪💪

🏁: big dose of runners high, so happy to overcome midway struggle.

In truth it’s one of those overcoming adversity battles that underlines why our sport is so great and so addictive. And I'm really sorry abut the non-compliant orange shorts”

{Ed. - spot the part that wasnt actually a direct quote ;-)) }

Kate Kilby decided not to risk racing as she wasn’t completely confident of being fully recovered from her injury.

County standings after Bugatti

Kate Jacobs has a strong lead in the Open but she can still be caught, and obviously she is well clear in her LV45 age group. Rich Allen is lying 2nd in MV40 but only one point behind/ahead of the guys in 1st/3rd. However, Rich has not lost to either of them on a head to head to basis which bodes well for a high podium finish.

Ruth Fulford is also currently leading her LV75 age group.

Two ladies with injury problems are still in with a chance – both Kate Kilby in LV65 and Karen Higuera in LV60 probably need to run 4 of the remaining 5 races to win their categories, although both have a decent chance for a medal of some description if they can only run at least 1 more.

In the team standings, our men are currently 5th in both Open and Veteran categories [Ed. I think this is probably the best for some years]. Our ladies are currently mid-table due to having failed to field at least 3 runners at Blaisdon or Berkeley (a penalty 1000 points applies, but these can drop away as the final result is on the best 8 scores from 120. With the addition of new members like Storm Trow and hopefully recovering Charlotte Wilton before too long, they could potentially still be in contention for a top-3 finish by the end of the series.

Weekend races

We only have news of two races over the weekend and they couldn’t be more different.

Over in Sydney, Sophie Chudley started up front in the small group of Elite Ladies in the 55th City2Surf event, which is just as well as there were around 90,000 runners behind her! The race is a non-standard distance of just under 9 miles, but within that Sophie clocked her 2nd best ever 10k at an estimated 36:12. She finished 9th of the elite ladies and 158th overall. Congratulations on another blistering pace Sophie.

Closer to home, David Moss ran the Prosecco 10k in Denbie’s vineyard near Dorking.

Take a look at the route from David’s strava track – cocktail glass?

I’m not sure how much drinking, if any, took place during the race, but he would have just missed the cut off for the Sizzler, so a leisurely pace for sure. Sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Congratulations to Ruth Fulford on her 200th Parkrun at Cirencester yesterday. Notwithstanding a tough 10k earlier on the week (see above) she was also the 2nd fastest club runner on an age graded basis.
