Bourton Mile and Powells Parkrun Takeover

Updated: 10 hours ago

{Ed. any errors or omissions in the results reporting are wholly down to me this week, as David Wright was unfortunately unavailable as usual – he will post full results including Parkrun to the usual place on our website as soon as he can }.

Club Championships Update

After 4 of the 11 races (Bourton Mile this week was the 4th, see below), the top 3 in the standings are

Men - Rich Allen, David Moss, James Widdowson

Ladies - Kate Jacobs, Karen Higuera, Jo Musk

Full details are on the website here https://www.cirencesterac.com/road-racing-championship

and the status with remaining fixtures are shown here https://www.cirencesterac.com/road-racing-fixtures

There may be a few (collect your number in person) spaces left for the Stroud Beer race, and Fairford 10k still has plenty of spaces (why not run that and then volunteer for the club’s sizzler race a few days later, unless you’re competing in the County Road Series).

Bourton Senior Mile

Fine weather, nice flat straight traffic free route and only a mile to run – what’s not to like! Thus the Bourton mile on Friday saw a fantastic 17 senior and 11 junior members competing in their respective races.

{Unfortunately, we don’t have all parental permissions to post the group photo on the bridge over the river as it contains juniors (Ed. - I am not au fait with photo-shopping).}

Congratulations to Brecht Grieten for his time of 4.56 which makes him the first Ciren man to get inside the 5 minutes mark for several years. Runners 10 years older (Rich Allen) and 19 years younger (Ben Clarke) than Brecht only just missed it, although both placed 3rd in their age categories, particularly impressive for Ben running against some teens 2 years older than him.

Kate Jacobs with 5.24 easily won her LV40 age category and (pending Glos AAA updating their road race series results) looks to have come 4th in the County Open category.

Our other prize winner was Karen Higuera who also picked up an age group prize, with Kate Kilby not far behind in 3rd.

Gordon Jones, who has a long history of doing well in this race, is now an MV75, but had to settle for 2nd this year in the broader MV70+ category.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE AAA ROAD RACE SERIES UPDATE

The Bourton Mile was also the 3rd of 12 races in the county competition (the one our Ladies Team won last year). As of going to press the standings had not been updated to reflect the Bourton results, but you can download them from here when they are released – hopefully in the next or two.

PARKRUNS

This week there was a Powell’s School “takeover” of Cirencester Parkrun, which presumably accounted for the ? record field of 451 (and more than usual runners with no barcode) .

Rob Forbes finished 1st – lapping most of the runners once or some even twice must have cost him some time, but his 17.31 was still one of his best ever, which bodes well for whatever his next big race is.

Junior Albert Platts (JM10) was next home in an impressive 21.00 for a new PB, just a few seconds ahead of Casey Vatcher and Heath Forbes (JM11-14).

None the worse for her Bourton Mile the day before, Karen Higuera (23.37) came 2nd overall on an age-graded basis with 81%.

There was a new PB of 27.46 for Sophie Mason (JW10), already with >50 parkruns under her belt - Macadams look out!

And finally, with Powell’s takeover in mind it was a family affair for the Leggates, with Bill and Kirsty accompanying Hamish and Philippa respectively on their first parkruns – looks like they enjoyed it!

Slightly further afield, Paul and Sam Timms managed to fit in the Watermeadows event in Towcester before hot-footing it to a wedding (beautiful pictures shared on Thursday runners group).

Very much further afield, and still in Japan, Phil Davey tried out a second and rather smaller event at Hikarigaoka Koen.

Road Racing

Proud dad James Widdowson paced his daughter and former member Rosie-Jane who knocked 2-minutes off her PB around the half marathon course in Plymouth. Having had to pull out of his last HM in Stroud, James was relieved to get round comfortably in 1.57.18, and also chuffed with his modestly described "metronomic" pacing.

Also racing his favourite HM distance, and with some great training times under his belt, Dave Bell headed to Bristol in search of a good time in the aptly named A J Bell Great Bristol Run. Unofrtunately for them, the HM runners had to wait until the 10k had finished and the weather was warming up – here’s Dave’s report filed on Strava (thanks!)

“That was tough going! 🥵 Too warm for me for a half marathon 🫠. Standing on the start line I could already feel the heat on my shoulders and knew it might be a tough day. Decided to set off at target pace (5:34) but after a couple of miles backed off as today wasn't the day to try and attempt sub 1h13 and stopped looking at watch around 4miles. Had a tough patch between 6-8 and then felt ok heading back into the city centre where there was a bit more shade (even though the splits were slowing). Really chuffed to grit this one out today 💪🏻 😁. No more half’s until the autumn I think though 😅”

Dave's time of 1.16.40 placed him 30th, and 6th in his age category (Ed. - this being his last season before hitting the big 40 I think)

Prior to the HM in Bristol several club members ran the 10k in the sunny conditions.

Congratulations to Jack Bonnick who set a PB of 37.10, not far off his target of sub-37 minutes. With better conditions and a less twisty course lets hope he’ll ring that PB bell again soon. Judging from his pic below either he was comfortably happy or just good at spotting the photographer ;-)

Angela Hilditch ran her 2nd fastest 10k ever, in 55.36 but confirmed it was hotting up well before she’d finished.

The third member running was Keith Firkin, with 47.06.

Off-road

The 5-mile fun run organised by Sherborne school saw Rob Forbes in action again on Sunday afternoon, winning again on 30.34.
