The circuit for children to do - seemed popular as some came back three times!

This was the fourth year that the Rotary Club of Cirencester had organised Activius Day, the community sports event, hosted at Cirencester Kingshill School. The day provided children and young people the opportunity to try an extensive range of sports and activities completely free of charge, with highlights including:

  • Sports & Martial Arts: Athletics, archery, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, rugby, karate, basketball, and pickleball.

  • Adventure & Performance: A climbing wall, circus skills, cheerleading, and dance.

  • Family Entertainment: Giant inflatables, laser shooting, and indoor curling.

The goal being to encourage young people and families to lead active lifestyles.

We had a quite busy day, and the coach got quite warm doing circuit demonstrations, despite welcome help from a Junior and Two Teens : Emilie Zaparka, Benjamin Worboys and Oliver Grant, and mums : Anna Zaparka and Rebecca Worboys.

Although many Clubs see it as a marketing opportunity, we already have a considerable Waitlist to join both Juniors and Teens sections, so the goal of our attendance was to show children how much fun challenging themselves to do some relatively simple activities could be. And, of course, if a child was really interested, to give them a feel for what we try to do.

The circuit comprised starting with a 5kg med ball slam (quite heavy for a five year old!), then running down one long jump runway, running / jumping over six 12" hurdles, 1m apart, leading into twelve 6" hurdles, 1.5m apart, then moving on to the other long jump runway to do a long jump with a stack of jump tiles before the board and a higher hurdle after the board to simulate some jump training approaches we use. I used those for some children who were just interested in jumping, first helping them to get their run ups right. For those who were really keen, I let them use my starting blocks, with the pedals adjusted for their physique, so they could see what it feels like to do a sprint start. One or two managed the steep shin angles for the first few steps.

We didn't have many names on the list at the end of the day, but those that were, were definitely keen!
