Teens "hot on the track"

Earlier this month, on a couple of Wednesdays, some of of our Teens were competing on the track, especially running 800m, in the heat:

  • Alice and Emily Averies running 800m at the Bristol Open

  • Ed Knight and Henry Woodfine running 800m at both the second and third C&CH organised Midsummer Opens at Blackridge (probably will do 4th as well!)

  • Aria Stavrakakis doing the long jump and running 200m at the third Midsummer Open.

8th July

Despite the temperature both boys achieved PBs at the first Open. Henry (14, so an U16) ran 2:22.12 in one "heat" (pun intended) and Ed (now 12 so U14) 2:36.7 in the other. Both boy's performances were Level 1 EA PB Award standard and there's probably scope for faster times in better conditions as Henry, despite sitting under a damp towel and being well hydrated beforehand still had a dry mouth of the second lap, which would have definitely slowed him down. Well done boys in adverse conditions for middle distance running.

Alice wasn't feeling too well and so did not achieve a PB, but her time was only 3 seconds outside, hence why she was back at training on the track on Thursday! Emily ran in an interesting "heat", where all the runners overtook the pace-maker, who was running the requested pace, winning the heat in a PB of 2:46.9.

15th July

Henry and Ed were both back doing the 800m. Well, I said above there was scope for improvement with Henry knocking another couple of seconds off his new PB with 2:20.18, which is practically (<0.2s) a Level 2 EA PB Award for U16 boy. According to dad, "Henry's pacing was better tonight". Ed wasn't as quick as previous race finishing in 2:38.88, but is still Level 1 PB Award, so well done, boys.

Aria jumped over 4m again in the long jump, a level 5 EA PB Award for U14 girl, and according to mum, "Consistent jumping today. Good height but still behind board and not sure she got to her max speed. 3.92, 3.93 and 4.03 and a no jump." An impressive series.

In the 200m, Aria ran 30.71 into a 0.9m/s headwind, which might explain why she wasn't closer to her sub-30 PB. It's still a Level 4 PB Award performance though. Well done Aria.

There will be a few more competing later this month at the last Midsummer Open and I will report on that shortly.
