Super Sizzler and a horsey weekend

Summer Sizzler 2026

Wednesday 10th saw the first sizzler with Luke Campbell acting as RD – our thanks and congratulations to him for all his hard work (not just on the day itself). New this year were

  • Locals Lush Timing - with their fab individual printouts

  • A cake stall (what runner doesn't like cake?)

  • Wooden medals - re-usable as coasters

  • A sensitively deployed PA system inc. to help withe prize giving

Fortunately, the forecast rain stayed away for both junior and senior races, with the sun peeking out just as the runners were finishing.

Whilst numerous members were involved in the setting up and marshalling etc., in the race itself, Bill Leggate was nip and tuck until the last part of the race with the eventual winner. Bill had to settle for second place and an age group prize, but was delighted with his run as his Strava post shows

“Was not expecting that 😱.  About 2 mins quicker than I expected and even took the lead briefly at 5km (perhaps a little optimistic 🤣) Managed to hold things together pretty well.

His time was less than 15s behind his own V45 club record, set a few years ago (and now correctly showing on the club website). Congratulations Bill.

Our first lady home, Storm Trow, also had a great race, not only picking up the prize for 3rd lady but also bursting into the club’s all-time top 10 ladies over 10k, her 38.07 ranking her 8th. {Only 13 ladies have ever run inside 40 minutes}.

Congratulations too to Clare Stickney for scooping up the LV45 prize – she only entered literally at the last minute (about 6:55pm).

JUNIOR SIZZLER

It was great to see over 100 juniors running either one or two laps of the short course. Many of them were from the home club – see below. Congratulations to Laurie Hobbs for his 2nd place in the shorter race.

Fastest club junior was 14 year old Toby Conway averaging an impressive 5:56 min/mile – faster than a large majority of our senior runners.

Friday 12th - Sandringham 10k

Martin Croucher was in action after a long injury break -

“Ran the Sandringham 10k on Friday. Lovely course and fun atmosphere. Great to back on the start line again after all this time. Held back a little on the first half but managed to maintain the pace till the end👍. Mile splits 7.48, 7.40, 7.49, 7.20, 7.49, 7.29. Time was 46.56 minutes. Very happy with run👍. “

The rumour that The King and Queen were going to be helping on the water station turned out not to be true – I’m sure the organisers don’t keep that rumour alive to boost their attendance ;-)

Well done to Martin for some unsurprisingly wise pacing and finishing very well up the field.

105 Martin Croucher (Cirencester AC) 47.05 (46.56)

Saturday 13th - Man v Horse (inc. 3-stage relay), Llanwrtyd Wells, 22 miles trail

If you’ve not heard of this event, you can read about it here

Five runners from our club participated. These three ran the whole thing

Kate Jacobs, Charlotte Wilton, Aaron Willis went all the way Man v Horse 2026, 22 miles

Whilst Jo Musk and Wendy Nicholls (see team shot below) “just” did one of the three legs in the relay option.

Here’s ringleader Kate’s account

We knew Man v Horse would be tough, but this was the toughest course yet. The uphills were immense. Charlotte and I ran as individuals but I also ran as the leg 1 relay runner for our team the Cirencester Sisters, with Wendy on leg 2 and Jo on leg 3.

The first 7 miles were brutal - the hills were unlike anything I’d ever done before. I handed over to Wendy for leg 2 but also carried on as an individual runner. It took me a good 4 miles to catch Wendy as those hills in the early miles took their toll. It wasn’t long before Jo came powering back past me for leg 3. It was so good seeing Wendy & Jo digging in & working so hard for our relay position!

It was such a proud moment, we won 2nd female relay team and I achieved 3rd female overall!!

You’ll have to ask again in a few months whether we will be back to do it again…”

And here’s Jo’s – looks like no need to wait for her vote about doing it again….

"Great first experience at Man V Horse. Felt a bit of a cheat speeding through the last leg past the poor people who'd run the full thing! But felt really strong up the hills thanks to the routes Kate has taken us round on Sunday mornings. Very pleased to bring us home for second ladies team.  All in all, a great day out and we're planning to come back with at least one ladies team next year."

Charlotte’s feedback was briefer  ;-)

Wtaf? 😳. What a race! Glad I’ve done it! Will not do it again… 😂

Saturday 13th - Rame Head

Tim Ingham was also doing his first race for a long time. This is the organiser’s description

“A chance to run round the stunning Mount Edgcumbe Peninsula. It’s a single loop 10.6K run loop that is mostly on coast path. It also means that the two-lap run is exactly a full half marathon and four laps makes a marathon. This route really is a corker with great views & terrain all the way. It also has a good mix of hills and flatter, faster sections.”

Tim chose the one-lap race, but that still included 925ft of elevation.

14 June 2026, Cheltenham Half Marathon

Having both run the Sizzler, mother and daughter Clare and Bella Stickney moved up a distance for a half marathon at the weekend in Cheltenham, carrying on the horse theme of the weekend. Clare's Strava post is below (she modestly omitted that she picked up here second V45 win of the week).

Lots of fun at the Cheltenham running festival! So hot!!!!🥵🥵🥵Fab atmosphere. V slow on lap 3 with all the races setting off! Mixed terrain. Fab day with Bella ❤️😎 “

Parkruns

Fastest time of the week goes to junior Edward Knight. Having sharpened up in the 3km Sizzler race on Wednesday, he proceeded to knock an enormous 65 seconds off his previous PB and in doing so break the 19-minute barrier for the first time.

If you want to know where to go for a parkrun PB it is surely Severn Bridge! Huge congratulations to Edward. Next milestone 80% age-graded?

At our home course, another junior sizzler runner, Annabel Campbell also set a parkrun PB and had the honour of being the first lady to finish – well done on both counts Annabel
