Our ladies clean up at the Beer race

SIZZLER NEXT WEDNESDAY 10TH JUNE - LOOKOUT FOR WHATSAPP MESSAGE TOMORROW ABOUT VOLUNTEERING

Stroud AC Beer Race at Minchinhampton

Those of you who’ve run this 7.2 mile road event before will know it’s already quite challenging in terms of elevation, so the 30C or so temperature on Wednesday was an extra bonus this year, although a slight breeze and some marshals equipped with water pistols and other ways of getting runners wet did help.

The conditions didn’t stop our ladies having a VERY successful evening, winning the team prize ahead of hosts Stroud and also individual prizes.

·       Kate Jacobs was 2nd lady (and 1st V45) – her hill training for the upcoming man v horse event paying dividends already.

·       Storm Trow, racing the course for the first time, did brilliantly to finish 3rd lady.

·       Charlotte Wilton was 7th lady, but unfortunately had to shoot off before the team prize was announced. She enjoyed everything about the event, and may have been one of the few who managed a negative split. If the race had been a matter of weeks later she would have won the V50 category by a comfortable margin.

There were also age-group prizes for

·       Kate Kilby V65 (but faster than the 1st V60 lady) – only 2 days after her sprint triathlon at Westonbirt.

·       Pam Wheeler – although she didn’t know it until the prize ceremony afterwards, she was the only lady over 70 brave enough to tackle the course on the night, and helped by encouragement from family/friends supporters and other runners she stuck it out to avoid what would otherwise have been her first ever DNF.

Congratulations to all our prizewinners !

Brian Harris was the only club man running. Having landed at Heathrow just hours before after almost 2 weeks away his expectations weren’t high. He did manage to stay with several of his age-group competitors until half-way, but then fell behind until a sustained home straight finish saw him overhaul a V50 on the line.

Thursday social run - "ticking" several boxes

We don’t usually report on these, but there were a number of firsts this week, albeit not all of them planned

·       Guest route-master Dave Wright set his first course – based around the route of the 10-mile Slog race that he has previously organised for the SARA charity. Most of us ran on some new (or long forgotten) trails. Thanks Dave!

·       Due to the hot weather, on a one-off trial basis, 8 of us set off with Dave at 8am

and the remaining 8 set off as usual at 9am, led by Alan McAdam.

·       The latter group were delayed by 10 minutes as they came upon an elderly lady who had taken a fall, and stopped to help her.

·       Lorna Harris provided unscheduled entertainment at coffee afterwards by removing a small tick, her first, having detoured to purchase special tweezers for the job (they worked well – it was removed intact). Her meagre count of 1 was surpassed later on by Alan McAdam’s impressive 7!

{Ed. - the staggered coffee/cake outcome may have increased takings and smoothed out peak demand for the Costa lot staff, but returning to a single session gets my vote].

Trail en Guirec, La Roz’lyne, Puerros Guirec, France,

David Wright returned to the tough but beautiful trail race along the pink granite coast in France, opting this year for the shorter 10km route. Congratulations to him for yet another age group prize.

PARKRUNNING

A rare parkrun appearance from Dave Bell saw him finish first at Kilkenny Lane, in an impressive 17.14 which included the 2ndfastest lap since the event started (if Strava is right). Ever self-critical, Dave would like to improve his mile splits, which were regressive rather than progressive. Watch this space…

There was a large club turnout at Cirencester, including a fair few Thursday runners comparing their final tick counts. Almost back to full fitness Rich Allen took 2nd place.

Congratulations to Annabel Campbell for her PB, and Ruaridh Wright for his course PB. Rachel Ranger also pushed herself to her best time this year.

Martin Croucher tried out a new course in Reading and after a lot of time off injured must have been pleased to run his fastest parkrun for a year.

Not shown below was a course PB for Hamish Leggate.
