National bronze for Kate, and another fast century for Dave

With the Sizzler last Wednesday having its own report, here is the rest of last week’s racing news, delayed by the editor’s break in Malta.

Long distance specialist Dave Musgrave was in action at the weekend in the 100-mile South Downs Way trail ultra put on by centurion running, an event he’s run before. Unfortunately, he is also somewhat of a specialist in another aspect – being sick mid-race.

Dave reports he was more ill than last year, meaning he had a slow middle section of the race. He then had “loads left at the end and smashed out a sprint finish again”. Whilst he was a bit disappointed to be 30mins slower than last year, his time of 22.06.58 still ranked him 101/405, and based on comments by experienced fellow ultra specialists, it was still impressively inside the magic 24 hour mark.

On Sunday 15th, our results guru David Wright was hoping to repeat his age group win from 2024 in the Alresford 10k road race, hoping it would again be rewarded with a large hamper. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a good run on the brutal course, and it was not to be this year. His 44.03 placed him 104/454.

Also on Sunda,y Kate Kilby and husband Andy (second claim member) got up very early indeed to tackle the middle distance Lakesman Triathlon in Keswick. Kate kindly sent this report, after taking a while to recover ;-)

“Lakesman hosted British and English middle-distance championships this year. Andy and I both completed so no pics of the race itself. We were up at 3:30 for the 6am start with a swim around the island in Derwent Water.

We were in the second deep water wave. Within seconds I was aware of my flimsy feeling (disposable) timing chip flapping at my ankle, and I spent the entire swim stressing I would lose it but remarkably it stayed attached. I avoided kicking! I was surprised Andy's bike was there as he's usually faster than me in the swim. We were racked together.

The bike leg was out west with the light wind against us and chilly, so I had an extra layer. Despite the hills, a faster course than my previous tris. {Ed – including a strava PB for 40km)

The run ran through the town with good support then up and downs of a flat road which was very dull when repeated for 4 laps, but straightforward. I adopted a cautious approach as I didn’t want to sustain further injury, and it paid off. The event was supremely well organized and friendly and the aid stations were well stocked. Andy completed the race and was pleased with his bike as he’s not done much training on it. Amazingly at Keswick rugby club they produced a hot meal of jacket potatoes with various toppings and sticky toffee pudding for 800 competitors! It was a while before we had the results and presentation wasn’t till 16:30, but I received medals and slate for 3rd in fv65 cat. Interestingly the v65s were faster than the v60s.

I would definitely recommend this race.”

Many congratulations to Kate for medalling in the national championships. She and Andy also bumped into former member Oliver Pritchard, who won his 25-29 age group.

Parkruns

Martin Croucher was not only our furthest afield parkrunner on Saturday 14th, but most likely the hardest working – the course at Great Yarmouth North Beach was entirely on sand and shingle, and is generally regarded as one of the hardest in the UK (Ed. not to give Martin ideas, but Whinlatter Forest is another, due to the hills – although I think some members have already run that one). If Martin’s HR on Strava was correct, then it really was tough – for reference the winner’s time was 23.00.

Nearer to home, Rob Forbes notched up yet another win although James Thomas in the club’s aero vest was not too far off in 3rdplace (good to see you back James). Congratulations to Jos Randall for her 150th milestone, and welcome to new club member Glenn Tyler.
