Sunshine, trail races and triathlons

There was some lovely sunny weather for the Four Farms Challenge in Deddington, Banbury. Keith Firkin ran this 20km trail race in 1.49.

This week there were more keen triathletes out for CAC at the Cotswold 51Fiver Triathlon. This involved a 1500m swim, 40km bike 10km run. Ian Barrett (27.15; 1.03.02; 37.47) 2.11.39 finished 1st V50. Corinne Clark (23.27; 1.04.57; 42.18) 2.13.45 – 2nd lady, 1st FV35 and Kate Kilby (34.52; 1.24.52; 50.42) 2.55.29.

Ian reports......On Sunday I ventured down to Lake32 for the 51Fiver Cotswold Standard Distance Triathlon. My first triathlon of the year, thankfully May weather had been supportive and warmed the lake from a challenging 13C to a balmy 18C. Despite that, the swim was slower than hoped and gave me a lot of bikes to chase on leg 2. I made good time and a fair few positions on the 40km bike course and set out on the run in the sun. I passed a couple of people early on, then spent the next 3 miles chasing a group in the distance, reeled the final one in as we returned to the lake, and that meant I clinched the M50 age group prize by 14 seconds.

This week David Wright took part in the May ‘5’ which is a 5 mile race around Cranford Heath which starts and finishes on the Ashdown athletics track which he finished in 33.54

Martin Croucher ventured to do the North Downs Way ‘50’ which goes from Farnham to Knockholt nr. Biggin Hill. Well done Martin for completing this 50 mile ultra in 11.12.36

Liza and Rupert did the Compton Downland Challenge in Berkshire this week which was a 16 mile trail race which they finished together in 3.38.04.

This weekend Ann Sherrington did the Cotswold Aquathlon in Lake 62 which comprised of a 750m swim followed by a 6km run. Ann completed the swim in 9.24 and the run in 27.31 to finish with an overall time of 38.27. She reports.......I did my 1st open water aquathlon of the season at Lake 62 (S Cerney) on 15/5 - the 1st of their 4 evening series events that I recommend to all who are interested in trying out multi-sports events. A really friendly, supportive local opportunity to race in a beautiful setting or to try out triathlon, aquathlon or aquabike as a newbie! 5/7 overall in the Aquathlon, 3/7 with the swim and 7/7 on the run. Really pleased with my swim and definitely some work to do on the running following a few months with a foot injury. It was a fun night!

Sherborne ‘5’ is a lovely local trail run and this year Brecht Grieten went with his family, with his son completing the fun run beforehand. Brecht then went on to win the race in 30.43! He was joined by Gordon Jones who finished in 46.46 to bag 1st V70. Well done both! There was a great selection of cake and a BBQ afterwards so the race comes highly recommended for the course and the scenery too!

There were plenty of parkrunners out this week, keeping it local in Cirencester, Tetbury and Chippenham. In Cirencester, there was Heath Forbes (J) 21.14, Otis Forbes (J) 22.19, Jo Musk 25.12, Gordon Jones 26.13, Isabella Stickney (J) 27.39, Pam Wheeler 29.20, Samantha Timms 30.28 and Tilly Campbell (J) 32.23. In Tetbury David Moss 24.16, Alan McAdam 26.23 and Rachel McAdam 27.15. Ollie Campbell won Chippenham in 17.46
