A Sizzling Summer Success

The Summer Sizzler most certainly lived up to its name this year. The sun shone all day for the setting up of the course and race HQ as months of preparation came to fruition for a wonderful 10k event. The hot, still conditions and the long drag up to Ewe Pens Farm (twice!) made for a challenging race for some.

In addition to the adult’s race there were two junior races, 2k for the Under 9s and Under 11s and 3k for the over 11s. There was a huge Cirencester turnout for these! A great family evening out.

Many club members slipped on the hi-vis vests to help Pam bring it all together, so just a handful were running, with some great results.

A very fine 37.39 from Ian Barrett gave him a top ten finish and second place in his MV50 age group. Also second in his age category, this time MV40, was Simon Campbell with an excellent sub 40 minute run. Nea Sneddon-Jenkins was our first lady home and fifth lady overall. There were solid runs from Tom Payne, Neil Morrissey and David Phelps.

James Widdowson was particularly pleased with his result, an improvement on his time at last months Berkeley 10k in spite of the heat and hills last night. Hard work paying off! Gordon Jones, fresh from his fantastic run at Fairford last week, took third spot in his MV70 age group and Barbara Thomas was fourth LV65. New member Lorna Harris ran well giving her club vest its first outing of many we hope.

Thanks to Pam and her team for bringing everything together on the night, to Rupert and Tim for the excellent course set up and to Dorian for organising the juniors’ events.

For those of you interested, the up-to-date standings in the Club Road Race Championship can be found on the website under the heading Racing.

Following the Fairford 10k last week, Brecht Grieten currently holds top spot in the men’s competition with Gordon Jones and Dave Bell joint second. Brian Harris is fourth but has points to be added to his total from a marathon. Marathon points will be added to totals after the last race of the championship in November.

In the ladies competition Rachel Barrow leads at the moment with Ruth Fulford second and Wendy Nicholls third.

There are still plenty of opportunities to pick up points with the remaining races covering every distance from 1 mile to a half marathon, and if you can squeeze in a cheeky marathon between now and 6th November even better!

The remaining races are;

Bourton Mile, 1st July

Cirencester parkrun, 13th August

Cotswold Classic 10 Mile, 3rd September

Cricklade 10k, 2nd October

Stroud Half Marathon, 23rd October

Guy Fawkes 5 Mile, 6th November

Any marathon before 6th November, this can be an off road event

A really nice story to round off with this week. Nick Wall headed up the promotion of new Couch to 5k group for beginners or returners to running. After a fairly hurried campaign to spread the word, an eager group met on Tuesday at Deer Park for the first of 9 weekly sessions. The group will work towards completing their first 5k run at a Cirencester parkrun in August.

The next report will appear early in the week beginning 27th June and so will cover two weekends worth of races. Please send any news of results you would like included to rachelelisabethbarrow@hotmail.co.uk
