Liza Qualifies for Masters Championship

Great news to start this week’s report. Liza Darroch and Rupert Chesmore travelled to Cheshire for the Tatton Half Marathon, set in the grounds of Tatton Park. The race was one of the qualifying events for the England Masters Age Group Championship half marathon at the Manchester Great Run next spring.

And of course Liza qualified with ease, She tells us a bit about it here. “Pretty pleased with the result, just needed to be in the age group top three so I’ll take second! Better still, Elaine Statham was only seconds in front and I had predicted she would be way, way ahead.”

“AND I bettered my Stroud time, just, although it was a tougher course with more hills and several sharp turns. Also, it RAINED, most of the time so we were wading through water at one point. Tatton Park was lovely, rolling green, lots of lakes and deer. Rupert was a complete star and pulled/pushed/accompanied me all the way round.”

“Having qualified, will I do the National Champs Manchester Great Run next May??? Who knows!!!”

We all hope so Liza! Many congratulations on another fine run and team effort.

Trail loving Karen Higuera completed one of her favourites, the Broadway Marathon on Sunday.

The race starts and finishes in the village of Broadway, takes in many climbs including an early one to Broadway Tower before heading to Snowshill, Stanway, Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle. A tough Cotswold tour.

Karen described herself as not trained and not feeling quite herself and so didn’t have high expectations. She was rightly pleased with her solid run and finish time, particularly in the conditions including swamp like areas and some parts as slippery as an ice rink.

Well done Karen.

The Castle Combe race circuit was the setting on Sunday for the Chilly 10k and duathlon events. Traffic free, wide and flat, these events are great for those chasing a time.

Dave Bell had a fantastic run in the 10k, finishing 2nd overall. Dave describes the race as tough going in the windy conditions which affected the consistency of his pace. But he was of course delighted with his overall result.

Brecht Grieten also put in an impressive performance in the duathlon comprising a 2 mile run, 10 mile bike followed by another 2 mile run. He has competed in duathlon and triathlon in the past, although busy family life means he hasn’t had much time for multi-sport events since the arrival of his little boy.

He was really happy with his result, finishing 11th overall. His strong running ability showed in his run times, pretty much a match with the race winner.

Well done Dave and Brecht.

In parkrun news, Gordon Jones continues his return from injury with a good run at Lydiard. Martin Croucher combined an excellent run at Oxford with a trip to the running shoe shop. Rachel and Alan McAdam both had age group wins at their holiday parkrun in Ashford. Ian Barrett was 2nd at Newent with an age grade result of 74%.

Luke Campbell battled high altitude and high temperatures at the Fig Tree event in South Africa. New club member Amanda Naylor is reaping the benefits of Tuesday night training and was pleased to run a sub 30 minute 5k for the first time in a while at the Maidstone event, her 96th parkrun.

Meanwhile, at a very muddy Cirencester, there was a win for Rob Forbes. Rachel Ranger celebrated her birthday with a 1st place FV50. There was a flurry of Cirencester runners finishing between 28 and 31 minutes including an age grade of almost 70% for Pam Wheeler.
